Surat Synthetic Textile Diamond Cooperative Gujarat

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Surat in the Surat district of Gujarat is India largest synthetic textile producing city and the world diamond polishing capital — two distinct industries that together make Surat one of India highest-value industrial cities. The Surat textile market processes over 40 million metres of synthetic fabric daily including polyester, viscose, and georgette, producing sarees, dress material, and furnishing fabric that supply markets across India and 40 export countries. The diamond polishing industry employs over 500,000 workers predominantly from the Patel and Jain communities of Saurashtra origin, polishing over 80 percent of the world rough diamonds by volume through a cooperative-adjacent business network. Surat silk and zari embroidery weaving traditions for wedding and ceremonial garments are supported by cooperative societies. Surat is also the entry point for synthetic fibre from Reliance petrochemical plants in nearby Hazira, integrating raw material with processing in the same region. The Surat Textile Traders Cooperative and diamond cooperative networks provide sector-wide welfare services.
