Pratapgarh district in central Awadh, UP is India's largest producer of aonla (amla, Indian gooseberry, Phyllanthus emblica) — a sour Vitamin C-rich superfood that is processed into amla murabba (preserve), amla candy, amla chyawanprash, amla pickle, and amla powder for Ayurvedic supplement exports. Pratapgarh's aonla orchards covering 50,000+ hectares produce 70% of India's total aonla output, and the district's fruit processing units are supported by the National Horticulture Mission. Sultanpur district (renamed Kashi Somali) grows sugarcane and paddy on the Gumti river plain and has a handloom tradition of coarse cotton weaving for local household fabric demand.
