Sualkuchi Pat Muga Silk Weaving Kamrup Assam

Sualkuchi is a town in Kamrup district of Assam known as the Manchester of Assam — an 8-kilometre stretch of village along the Brahmaputra's north bank with approximately 25,000 looms concentrated in homes, making it India's largest single-site concentration of silk handloom weaving. Sualkuchi produces Assam's two signature silk fabrics: Pat silk (from Bombyx mori mulberry silkworm — bright white with a fine, lustrous sheen) and Muga silk (from Antheraea assamensis endemic silkworm — natural golden honey colour, the only golden silk in the world). Both fabrics are woven on traditional semi-automatic shuttle looms or pit-mounted fly-shuttle looms. Pat silk is used for mekhela-chador (Assamese two-piece saree garment) bodies with plain or small jaquard designs. Muga is reserved for mekhela-chador for festivals, weddings, and special occasions — prized for its natural gold colour which deepens with washing and age, improving over years unlike any other fabric. Sualkuchi weavers also produce eri silk fabric from Samia ricini silkworm (semi-wild on castor plant) — a warm, spongy ahimsa silk (the silkworm pupates naturally rather than being killed for silk extraction). Sualkuchi Handloom Weavers' Cooperative Society has 15,000 member weavers. Assam Silk brand certification protects genuine Sualkuchi products from imitation. Muga silk mekhela-chador prices range from 3,000 to 150,000 rupees depending on quality and traditional motif complexity.
