Spiti Cold Desert Peas Wool Fossil Park Lahaul Himachal Pradesh

Lahaul and Spiti district contains the Spiti Valley — a cold, high-altitude desert at 3,800–4,500m between Himachal's Himalayan ranges — where communities grow green peas, potatoes, and barley in the short summer growing season, producing some of India's highest-altitude vegetables sold to Manali and Shimla markets. The Spiti Valley is Himachal's Buddhist cultural heartland — the Tabo Monastery (996 CE, the "Ajanta of the Himalayas") and Key Monastery are among India's most important living Tibetan Buddhist institutions. The Langza village fossil park contains marine fossils at 4,400m — evidence of the ancient Tethys Sea that preceded the Himalayan uplift. Spiti's ibex, snow leopard, and bharal (blue sheep) make it one of India's premier snow leopard tourism destinations.
