South Sikkim Namchi Agriculture Tilapia Organic Farming Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
South Sikkim district centred on Namchi is the most densely cultivated district of Sikkim — producing large cardamom, ginger, turmeric, and off-season vegetables on the terraced hillsides irrigated by mountain streams. Namchi's Char Dham replica complex (replicas of India's four dhams on a hilltop) and the Siddhesvara Dham (with Asia's tallest statue of Shiva) are religious tourism landmarks. The district's Sribadam and Jorethang area is Sikkim's commercial hub for ginger trade. South Sikkim's rivers support freshwater fish culture — tilapia and common carp are farmed in the valleys. The district is transitioning from conventional to organic cultivation as Sikkim implements its statewide organic certification programme.
