Khandoba Festival Music: Ritual Folk Performance of Solapur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Solapur district is in the cultural sphere of the Khandoba deity, the martial warrior god of Maharashtra who is the kul-devi of many Dhangar (shepherd), Kumbhar (potter), and Maratha communities. The Jejuri Khandoba temple (near Pune) is the most famous shrine, but Solapur has its own Khandoba traditions at the Mallanna temple. The Khandoba festival involves distinctive ritual music performed by Vaghya-Murali devotee pairs: Vaghya (man) and Murali (woman) are hereditary performers dedicated to Khandoba service, singing specialized devotional songs (ovis and kirtan-type songs) with dhol and lezim accompaniment. Turmeric powder (bhandar) showered on devotees during Khandoba worship creates dramatic visual spectacle. The annual Champa Shashthi festival in December is the culminating celebration, with nightlong performance. Solapur's significant Lingayat community adds a Karnataka Khandoba tradition influence to the local ritual ecology.
