Yakshagana Dance Drama Tradition of Shivamogga

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Yakshagana is Karnataka's most spectacular classical folk theatre, combining elaborate costuming, rhythmic percussion, vocal music, and vigorous dance to depict stories from Hindu epics. Shivamogga district lies on the eastern edge of the traditional Yakshagana belt, which extends from the coast to the Malnad hills. Local Yakshagana troupes perform the Tenkutittu (southern style) variant, characterised by high-pitched singing, acrobatic dance movements, and massive painted crowns. The costume and make-up of each character type follows strict iconographic conventions — heroes wear gold crowns with peacock feathers, demons wear red and black face paint. Shivamogga's Yakshagana melas perform through the night at annual temple festivals, with loyal audiences following troupes to multiple performances.
