Shillong Khasi Bamboo Cane Craft Meghalaya
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Khasi tribal communities in Shillong and East Khasi Hills district, Meghalaya, produce intricate bamboo and cane baskets, trays, and furniture using traditional weaving techniques. The Shang Pyrthat flat-weave bamboo tray and the conical Khasi Khoh rain hat are iconic craft forms. Weavers split bamboo culms into thin strips, boil and dry them for flexibility, then interlace in hexagonal or twill patterns. Cooperative artisan societies in Shillong and Mawlai suburb supply the Meghalaya government cooperative emporia and tourist markets on Police Bazar. Cane furniture from Sohra and Mawsynram cooperative workshops is sold in Guwahati and Kolkata furniture markets. NEHHDC provides design training and market linkage for Khasi craft cooperatives.
