Shatavari — Women's Tonic Root Rajasthan

Contributed by System

Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is Ayurveda's premier women's health herb — the name means "she who has 100 husbands," referring to its fortifying properties. The climbing plant grows wild in tropical India and is cultivated commercially in Rajasthan, UP, and Karnataka. The tuberous roots contain steroidal saponins (shatavarosides) clinically shown to support lactation, hormonal balance, and stress. A 2-year-old shatavari plant yields 2–3 kg fresh roots; dried and powdered root fetches ₹400–600/kg. Rajasthan's arid loamy soil in Nagaur and Ajmer districts produces high-saponin roots. The plant is threatened in wild habitats due to excessive collection. Cultivation from root division or seed produces harvest in 18–24 months. KVIC and TRIFED promote shatavari cultivation in tribal areas of Rajasthan and MP. Patanjali, Himalaya, and Dabur are major buyers. GACP-certified shatavari for export commands ₹800–1,200/kg.
