Sambalpur Bandha Ikat Weaving Cooperative Odisha
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Sambalpur district in western Odisha is the heartland of Sambalpuri bandha ikat, one of India most celebrated handloom traditions. Weavers in Sonepur, Barpali, Bargarh, and Sambalpur itself bind and resist-dye yarn bundles before weaving, creating precise geometric and natural motifs — shankha conch, chakra wheel, lotus — that align perfectly when the cloth is woven. The design is simultaneously present in warp and weft threads by a technique called double ikat. Cooperative weaver societies in Sambalpur supply yarn from Central Silk Board and market finished sarees through Utkalika emporium and online. Sambalpuri ikat received GI tag. A famous variant — Kotpad — uses natural dyes from aal tree bark. Weavers face competition from power-loom copies printed with false double-ikat appearance.
