Salem Mango Cultivation and Mango Gruel Food Tradition

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Salem district is one of Tamil Nadu's most important mango-producing regions, with the Banganapalli, Neelam, Sendoora, and the distinctive Salem Gundu (ball mango) varieties grown in the hot, semi-arid climate of the Kongu region. The Salem Gundu, a small round mango with intensely sweet pulp, has been selected and maintained by farmers in the region for over a century. Traditional food uses include mango gruel (maangai kanji) — raw mango pulp mixed with cooked rice, salt, and water — consumed as a cooling summer food. Mango pickles (avakkai) made with oil, chilli, and fenugreek are prepared in large clay jars and preserved for the year. Salem's mango orchards also supply juice processors and dehydrated mango exporters.
