Sahiwal and Gir Desi Cattle Organic Dairy
Contributed by System
Sahiwal (Punjab/Rajasthan) and Gir (Gujarat) are India's most productive indigenous dairy breeds. Sahiwal cows yield 2,000–3,000 litres/lactation; Gir 1,500–2,500. Both are tick-resistant, heat-tolerant, and thrive on crop residues — ideal for small farmers. Their milk is A2 type (contains only A2 beta-casein), now scientifically preferred by health-conscious consumers over A1 Holstein milk. A2 milk commands ₹80–120/litre retail vs ₹50–60 for ordinary milk. NDDB, state governments, and organic dairy cooperatives are promoting Sahiwal and Gir herds under breed improvement programs. Demand for A2 desi ghee at ₹1,800–3,500/kg is driving profitability.
