Bundeli Mela, Sacred Fair, and Trade Culture of Sagar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Sagar district hosts a series of sacred fairs that double as major trading events, embedded in the agricultural and ritual calendar. Nauradehi Sanctuary mela, Garhpachra mela, and the Sagar Lakhha Banjara fair draw traders in cattle, grain, cloth, and artisan goods from across Bundelkhand. Mela trading follows a spatial organisation with cattle in peripheral zones, grain traders in the centre, and artisans and confectioners near the temple entrance. Folk performances — Alha singing, Rai dance, juggling, and acrobatics — occupy evening hours. Mela credit operates on community trust: traders accept goods on consignment from distant producers, settling accounts at the following year mela or at market towns en route. This informal credit network has sustained small-scale Bundeli trade for centuries and remains active.
