Sabarmati Ashram Khadi Weaving Ahmedabad Gujarat
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Sabarmati Ashram at Ahmedabad, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917 as the base for the Khadi and charkha spinning movement, is both a historical monument and a continuing centre for the Khadi hand-spinning and handloom weaving tradition that Gandhi developed as the economic and political cornerstone of the Swadeshi independence movement, with the Charkha spinning wheel becoming the symbol of self-reliance on the Congress flag. The ashram maintained weaving sheds where weavers produced plain Khadi cotton cloth from hand-spun yarn, demonstrating that rural India could clothe itself without Lancashire imports, and the Sabarmati ashram experiment scaled into the Khadi and Village Industries Commission that today supports over 4 million artisans producing Khadi fabric, leather, pottery, and other village industry products across India. The Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya at the ashram preserves Gandhi spinning wheel collection, the Nandini weaving shed, and the historical record of the non-cooperation movement. The ashram complex including Gandhi quarters, weaving sheds, and the riverfront promenade hosts thousands of visitors daily and is managed by the Sabarmati Ashram Preservation and Memorial Trust.
