Rohtas Sasaram Sher Shah Suri Tomb Heritage
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Rohtas district's administrative centre Sasaram contains the magnificent tomb of Sher Shah Suri (1540), the Afghan emperor who built the Grand Trunk Road from Chittagong to Kabul and introduced the rupee currency system — an architectural masterpiece of Lodi-era Afghan style set in the middle of an artificial lake. Rohtas district also contains Rohtasgarh Fort, a 16th century Rajput-Afghan fortress on a Kaimur plateau escarpment that commands views over the Son valley and was garrisoned by successive rulers including Akbar's forces and later the Bhojpur rajas. Rohtas is a major producer of cement given its limestone-rich Kaimur plateau geology, and the district's Son river ghats at Dehri-on-Sone are pilgrimage sites for Chhath Puja.
