Rewari Ahirwal Cattle Breed Haryana
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Ahirwal region of southern Haryana centred on Rewari, Mahendragarh, and Bhiwani is the traditional breeding ground of the Haryana cattle breed — a large, muscular draft-dairy breed that ploughed Haryana's fields for centuries before tractors and continues to provide draft power for small farms. Ahir community breeders in Rewari maintain Haryana breed bulls and cows, participating in the government's Haryana cattle breeding programme that preserves the breed's unique traits: high draft endurance, moderate milk yield, and exceptional heat tolerance. Haryana cattle fairs at Rewari draw buyers from across North India seeking working bulls for small paddy and vegetable farms.
