Belan and Son River Step-Well and Water Heritage of Rewa
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Rewa district has a dense network of baolis — step-wells — built by Baghel Rajput rulers between the 15th and 18th centuries to supply water for towns and pilgrimage routes. The most elaborate at Govindgarh has five descending flights of steps reaching the perennial water table 18 metres below ground, with small niches for oil lamps used during night pilgrimages. Step-wells served dual purposes: potable water supply and ritual bathing for pilgrims visiting Vindhyavasini shrines. The Son River is managed by a complex of small check dams and diversion weirs built by the Rewa princely state that continue to function. Traditional water-use protocols assigned specific bathing ghats to different communities — women upstream of men, animals downstream of domestic use — a spatial management system maintained by village panchayats.
