Raigarh Bison Horn Maria Gond Dance Chhattisgarh

Raigarh district in eastern Chhattisgarh has a living tradition of the Pandvani performance art — an oral epic recitation of the Mahabharata in Chhattisgarhi dialect, performed by hereditary Pardhani caste performers who weave together singing, story, and physical gesture to narrate the Pandava story. The Pandvani tradition was brought to national attention by legendary singer Teejan Bai from Ganiyari village, Bilaspur, who received the Padma Vibhushan for bringing this folk epic form to concert stages worldwide. Raigarh's bison horn headdress of the Maria Gond tribe — curved bison horns decorated with peacock feathers — is an iconic tribal cultural symbol, worn by young men at Ghotul (tribal youth dormitory) festivals.
