Traditional Tank and Canal Water Management Heritage of Raichur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Raichur district's historical water management system comprised hundreds of tanks constructed under Vijayanagara and Bahmani patronage to capture the seasonal flood waters of the Krishna and Tungabhadra tributaries. The most significant traditional tank system is the Kavitha tank near Sindhanur, whose bund, sluice, and surplus weir design represent 14th-century hydraulic engineering. Community water management in Raichur's tank-irrigated villages was governed by a Neeruganti (water manager) system — a hereditary position responsible for opening and closing sluices, resolving water disputes, and organising bund maintenance. The Tungabhadra Board's modern canal system largely displaced traditional tanks for irrigation, but several tank systems have been revived for drinking water supply and fisheries.
