Purba Medinipur Digha Coast Pattachitra Tamluk Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Purba Medinipur district on the Bay of Bengal coast is the home of Patachitra (Pata) scroll painting — a narrative scroll tradition where hereditary Chitrakar caste painter-singers (patua) illustrate mythological episodes on long cloth or paper scrolls that they sing-narrate while unrolling (jadupatua tradition), now exhibited at Kalighat and sold as crafts. The district's Pingla village has become a Patachitra cluster with the Chitrakar community organised into a producers' collective supported by the Crafts Council of West Bengal. Purba Medinipur's Bay of Bengal coastline at Digha and Mandarmani supports a significant marine fishery where Maiti and Mahishya caste fishers operate mechanised trawlers and country boats for pomfret, prawn, and hilsa catch.
