Panchkula Rose Floriculture Shivalik Belt

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Panchkula district's cool sub-montane Shivalik climate and well-drained soils of the Ghaggar river terrace are well-suited to rose cultivation, with farmers in Raipur Rani and Morni tehsils growing hybrid tea roses in open fields and polyhouses for the Chandigarh cut-flower market. Panchkula is Chandigarh's primary fresh flower supply district, and rose growers here achieve continuous harvest cycles from September to April by selecting appropriate varieties and managing irrigation. The district horticulture department's polyhouse subsidy programme has enabled 200-plus farmers to shift from wheat to floriculture, increasing income per acre by three to four times.
