Nawanshahr Sahiwal Cattle Rearing Kandi Belt
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The Sahiwal, India's highest-yielding indigenous cattle breed, is reared in Nawanshahr's Kandi belt villages where farmers keep small herds of three to eight cows for milk production, valuing the breed's heat tolerance, tick resistance, and ability to maintain production on low-quality roughage fodder. Nawanshahr's Sahiwal cows are enrolled in the National Programme for Bovine Breeding semen scheme, with artificial insemination from elite Sahiwal bulls supplying quality genetics to village herds. The breed's A2 milk protein composition commands premium prices from health-conscious urban buyers in Chandigarh who pay two to three times the cooperative price for farm-direct Sahiwal milk.
