Bidriware Metal Craft: Hyderabadi Heritage in Nanded

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Nanded district's historical proximity to Hyderabad (which was part of the Nizam's state) has resulted in the presence of bidriware metalcraft traditions in Nanded's artisan community. Bidriware is a distinctive metalcraft in which decorative inlays of pure silver (and sometimes gold) are hammered into incised designs in a black alloy of zinc and copper. The black colour is achieved by treating the finished piece with a paste of sal ammoniac and water, which blackens the zinc alloy but leaves the silver bright. Designs include floral patterns derived from Mughal decorative art, geometric borders, and calligraphic inscriptions. Nanded's bidri artisans learned the craft from Hyderabad masters, and produce hookah bases, trays, boxes, and decorative plates. The craft has received GI tag status (Bidar Bidriware). Nanded craftsmen collaborate with Bidar artisans and sell through government crafts emporiums.
