Cauvery Basin Coconut Cultivation of Namakkal

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Namakkal district's river valleys — particularly along the Cauvery, Moyanur, and Thirumanimuthar tributaries — support intensive coconut cultivation, with the district ranked among Tamil Nadu's top coconut-producing districts. The Kongu Coconut — distinguished by its medium-sized nut and thick, sweet flesh — is prized for copra production and fresh consumption. Traditional coconut farmers prune the trees in a distinctive way to encourage maximum nut production and allow intercropping of banana, turmeric, and betel vine beneath the canopy. Coconut jaggery — made by boiling fresh coconut sap collected by toddy tappers — is a traditional product of Namakkal's river valleys, distinct from sugar cane jaggery in its caramel flavour and mineral content.
