Molela Terracotta Votive Plaques Rajsamand Rajasthan

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Molela village in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan is the exclusive production center for a distinctive style of painted terracotta votive plaque depicting tribal deities and folk heroes. The Kumhaar (potter) community of Molela has practiced this craft for centuries, producing relief-modeled panels of Devnarayan (a folk hero), Teja Ji, and other deities that are purchased by Bhil, Minas, and Garasia tribal worshippers and used as votive offerings at village shrines. The plaques are hand-modeled in local clay, sun-dried, bisque-fired, and painted in mineral and natural pigments with strong graphic outlines. GI protection covers Molela terracotta craft. The craft is distinct from other Rajasthan terracotta in its relief sculpture technique and devotional function. Rajasthan tourism and crafts export organisations have supported Molela potters in producing contemporary decorative wall panels for the urban and export market.
