Mokokchung district is the cultural heartland of the Ao Naga people — the first Naga tribe to be Christianised (American Baptist missions from 1872) and the producers of one of India's most distinctive textile traditions. Ao Naga weaving uses three main shawl types distinguished by stripe colour combinations that communicate social status and accomplishment. Mokokchung's terraced paddy cultivation produces traditional Naga rice varieties, and the district grows anise (saunf) and ginger as cash crops. The Doyang river and Doyang Reservoir (hydropower dam) in the district support the world's largest congregation of Amur falcons during October–November migration — an estimated 1 million birds roost at Doyang before crossing the Indian Ocean to Africa, making Nagaland a global raptor migration landmark.
