Mizoram Zawlbuk Traditional Basket Weaving
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The zawlbuk was the communal bachelor hall of Mizo villages — a social and military training institution for young men. The basket weaving tradition associated with zawlbuk produced standardised containers for storing rice, fish, and supplies for the communal hall. Contemporary Mizo basket weaving continues this tradition, producing the characteristic zawlbuk basket (large rectangular rice storage), dawr market basket (handled carrying basket), and thingpui (flat display tray). Weavers use the split culm of Muli bamboo (Melocanna baccifera) harvested in Lunglei, Champhai, and Serchhip districts. The weave is a simple twill or hexagonal pattern producing a regular open-mesh surface. Women weave domestic baskets while men construct larger storage and furniture items. The Mizoram Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation supports artisans with raw material access and marketing. Tourist trade and online platforms have expanded market reach beyond state borders.
