Mizoram Mizo Bamboo Weaving Cooperative Aizawl

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Aizawl in the Aizawl district of Mizoram is the capital of one of India most densely bamboo-forested states, where Mizo tribal communities have developed a comprehensive bamboo material culture producing baskets, mats, furniture, decorative items, and building materials from the over 30 bamboo species native to the Lushai hills. Mizo women are expert bamboo weavers, producing the distinctive Zawlbuk community youth dormitory furniture, funeral baskets, and traditional parawng house mats on split bamboo frames using herringbone and hexagonal weave patterns. The Bamboo and Rattan Development Institute BRDI in Aizawl supports cooperative bamboo craft training and product development. Mizoram also produces ginger, turmeric, and passion fruit as commercial crops under cooperative marketing. The Christian cooperative ethic among the predominantly Presbyterian Mizo community has shaped strong cooperative institutions including cooperative credit unions, youth cooperative societies, and community development organisations. Mizoram Bamboo Policy mandates cooperative involvement in bamboo harvest.
