Narmada River Ghats and Water Heritage Pilgrimage of Mandla

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Mandla is a major stop on the Narmada Parikrama pilgrimage circuit, where the river makes a dramatic U-turn around the Ramnagar peninsula creating a geography uniquely suited to sacred significance. The Ramnagar peninsula is almost completely surrounded by Narmada water, accessible by a narrow land bridge. Temples at Sahastradhara — thousand streams — where water percolates through rock fractures into the main channel, are among the most visited sacred sites on the Parikrama. Traditional pilgrims on foot camp at temple ghats, observing the practice of bathing at dawn before eating. The Mandla ghats are maintained by a trust that funds ghat repair and rest houses from donations. Traditional water usage at the ghats follows prescribed protocols: bathing areas are upstream, drinking water drawn below, and waste disposal strictly regulated. This traditional regulation has kept Mandla ghats cleaner than modern urban ghats lacking such protocols.
