Chennur Cotton Handloom Textile Heritage of Mancherial
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Chennur in Mancherial district has a traditional handloom weaving community producing cotton sarees, lungis, and dhoti fabric. The Padmasali weaver community in Chennur maintains pit loom weaving of simple cotton checks and stripes. The local fabric is particularly valued for its durability — weaver cooperatives in Chennur use long-staple cotton yarn that produces cloth with higher thread count and longer wear life than cheaper alternatives. The Chennu river in the area provides water for washing and finishing the woven cloth before marketing. Mancherial's proximity to Karimnagar's silver filigree craft community has created a gifting tradition where silver filigree jewellery is paired with Chennur cotton sarees for wedding presents.
