Majuli Island Pottery Mask Making Assam
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Majuli in the Majuli district of Assam is the world largest river island in the Brahmaputra and the spiritual heartland of Assamese Vaishnavite culture, home to approximately 22 active Satra monastery institutions and unique craft traditions including mukha mask making and pottery centred on the satra communities. Majuli masks crafted for the Bhaona theatrical performances of the Satras depict demons, heroes, and gods from the Mahabharata and Ramayana in oversized bamboo and paper-mache constructions painted with natural pigments. The Panikoi and Sutradhar artisan castes have hereditary responsibility for mask making in Majuli satras. Pottery traditions on Majuli produce distinctive terracotta pots for ritual use in satra ceremonies using river clay. The threat to Majuli from annual flood and erosion has destroyed significant cultural heritage and displaced artisan communities over recent decades. UNESCO World Heritage nomination efforts continue. Cooperative artisan societies in Garamur and Kamalabari support Majuli craft makers with material inputs and market linkage.
