Maize Corn Cultivation Kosi Darbhanga Bihar
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Bihar has emerged as a major maize-producing state, with the Kosi, Darbhanga, Samastipur, and Vaishali districts growing hybrid maize as a kharif and early rabi crop. Bihar maize is used for poultry feed, starch processing, and sweet corn for urban markets. Farmers in the Kosi flood plain grow maize on raised beds to manage waterlogging risk. Bihar Seed Corporation provides improved hybrid seed varieties including Pioneer Hi-Bred and CIMMYT-derived varieties with high yield and drought tolerance. The emergence of starch extraction plants and chicken processing industry in Patna and Muzaffarpur has created sustained demand for local maize. FPO federations negotiate bulk supply contracts with processors. Bihar government's maize cluster program provides soil testing, input subsidy, and farm machinery pooling for maize farmer groups.
