Madhubani Wheat Paddy North Bihar Plains Farming

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Madhubani district in the Mithila terai zone grows wheat in the rabi season and paddy in the kharif season on seasonally flooded alluvial plains fed by the Bagmati, Kamala, and Adhwara river systems. The district's irregular flooding pattern — a blessing in providing silt-rich alluvium but a curse in damaging standing crops — requires farmers to maintain flexible crop varieties that can tolerate delayed planting when floods recede. Madhubani's paddy includes traditional long-duration varieties like Joha aromatic rice grown on residual flood moisture and new flood-tolerant short-duration varieties provided by ICAR's submergence tolerance breeding programme.
