Lucknow Charbagh Terracotta Craft Uttar Pradesh
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Lucknow region of Uttar Pradesh has a distinct terracotta craft tradition associated with Kumhar (potter) communities producing both functional and decorative earthenware in clay preparation, throwing, and kiln-firing techniques that blend Mughal period refinement with local Gangetic plain folk pottery heritage. Lucknow terracotta is notable for its fine surface painting in natural mineral pigments (red, white, black) depicting floral, bird, and geometric motifs influenced by the Awadh court's aesthetic vocabulary — flowers, mango trees, and deer in flat decorative style. The Charbagh and Aliganj areas of Lucknow have terracotta craft clusters. Beyond decorative objects, Lucknow's Kumhar community produces traditional village-use pottery — water storage pots, cooking vessels, and diyas — alongside craft-market decorative items. Terracotta craft development is supported under UP government craft schemes. Lucknow terracotta items feature in national craft fairs and government emporium retail. The tradition complements Lucknow's broader reputation as a craft city through its Chikankari, zardozi embroidery, and mitti (clay) craft ecosystem.
