Kutch Traditional Embroidery Bhuj Gujarat
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Kutch district of Gujarat is home to one of the world's most diverse embroidery traditions, practiced by over 20 communities including Rabari, Jat, Ahir, Mutwa, Meghwal, and Sodha communities, each with a distinct stitch vocabulary and motif system. Rabari embroidery uses dense chain stitch and mirror work on black or red cotton to depict stylised camels, peacocks, and geometric medallions. Jat community embroidery features interlocking geometric patterns in bright silk thread. Meghwal embroidery on leatherwork combines embroidered uppers with applique. The GI tag protects Kutch embroidery as a heritage product. The Khamir Craft Resource Centre in Bhuj and Shrujan trust in Bhuj support hundreds of women artisans with design adaptation training, material supply, and direct-market linkage to fashion brands globally. UNESCO has recognised Kutch embroidery as part of its intangible heritage registers.
