Vijayawada Kanaka Durga Temple and Indrakeeladri Heritage

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Kanaka Durga temple in Vijayawada, Krishna district, is Andhra Pradesh's most visited temple, perched atop the Indrakeeladri (Indra's hill) on the north bank of the Krishna river. The temple's history spans over 2,000 years, with the stone-carved deity Kanaka Durga considered a Swayambhu (self-manifested) form of the mother goddess. The hill's granite formation and the river confluence below are considered a powerful Shakti Peetha — one of the primary goddess energy centres of the Hindu tradition. The annual Dasara festival at Kanaka Durga draws millions of pilgrims. The hill's inscription records include multiple periods of temple construction and renovation from the Satavahana period onwards. The temple's ablutionary tank (pushkarini) is replenished by the Krishna river's seasonal floods.
