Kota Stone Natural Flooring of Rajasthan

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kota stone is a fine-grained limestone quarried in Kota and Jhalawar districts of Rajasthan, used as flooring material across India for its durability, natural sheen, and cool-surface property. The stone ranges in colour from grey-blue to greenish with characteristic fossil and shell impressions. Kota stone quarrying employs over 50,000 workers in the region. The stone is split along natural planes with wedges and dressed by hand for uniform thickness. Traditional craftsmanship includes sandblasting patterns and carving of decorative panels. Kota stone has been used in India government buildings, airports, and heritage structure restorations. The natural quarrying community (primarily Kanjaria tribal community) has practiced stone splitting for generations. Environmental regulations now govern quarry depth and drainage. Export to the UK, USA, and Middle East construction markets is significant.
