Phasephaar Community Craft Heritage of Kolhapur

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

The Phasephaar (also Fasephar) community of Kolhapur district, a scheduled caste community traditionally engaged in basket and mat weaving from date palm and bamboo, has maintained traditional craft skills alongside agricultural labour. Their primary products include date palm leaf baskets (tokar) for agricultural use, bamboo cradles (palana) for infants, and woven mats (aasan) for sitting. The distinctive Phasephaar mat weaving uses a herringbone interlacing pattern that makes the mat resistant to wear. Women of the community are the primary weavers, producing both functional and decorative items. The annual Kolhapur craft fair provides a platform for Phasephaar artisans. Government craft development programmes have introduced new product designs including decorative wall panels and table mats using traditional Phasephaar weaving techniques, helping artisans access urban home decoration markets.
