Someshwara Temple and Sacred Tank Architecture of Kolar
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Kolaramma (Kolaramma Devi) temple in Kolar town is one of Karnataka's oldest functioning temples, with inscriptional evidence dating its origins to the Ganga dynasty of the 7th century CE. The Someshwara temple complex adjacent to the main shrine features a Dravidian gopuram and a large sacred tank (kalyani) cut from granite, fed by a subterranean spring. The tank's water is considered medicinal and is used in temple rituals and distributed as prasadam. The temple's architecture shows layers of Ganga, Chola, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara construction, each visible in the different levels of the sanctum and mandapam. Annual Brahmotsavam at the Kolaramma temple is Kolar's largest community event, drawing lakhs of devotees from across the district.
