Kolar Gold Fields Mining Heritage and Mineworker Community
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
The Kolar Gold Fields (KGF) in Kolar district operated for over 120 years as one of the world's deepest and most productive gold mines, yielding over 800 tonnes of gold before closure in 2001. The mines, originally worked by the British from 1880 under the Champion Reef Mining Company, reached depths exceeding 3 kilometres — among the deepest mines anywhere. The KGF created a unique multicultural mining town culture, with Tamil, Telugu, Anglo-Indian, British, and Sikh communities living in planned townships built by the mining company. The mineworkers developed distinctive traditions — the KGF Carnival, the mining safety songs (silaambam songs), and a hybrid cuisine blending South Indian, Anglo-Indian, and British influences. KGF has been revived as a cultural heritage tourism destination following the commercial success of the KGF films.
