Khambhalia Shankh Conch Shell Bangle Gujarat

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Artisans in Khambhalia (Devbhoomi Dwarka) and Dwarka carve conch shells into stacked bangles worn by married Hindu women. The craft, practiced by the Sankhari community, involves cutting raw conch imported from coastal Bengal and Odisha, shaping rings on grinding wheels, and polishing with turmeric. Conch bangles are considered auspicious and are integral to Bengali and Gujarati bridal traditions. Very few Sankhari artisans remain, making this a critically endangered craft.
