Sitalpati Mat Weaving — Cooch Behar's Cool Cane Craft

Sitalpati, meaning "cool mat," is woven from the stem of the mutra cane plant in Cooch Behar and Koch Bihar districts of West Bengal. Artisans split the cane into fine strips and interlace them into intricate geometric patterns using a loom-less hand technique. The resulting mats are prized for their natural cooling properties and are a GI-tagged export from Bengal.
