Vindhya Fort and Limestone Temple Architecture Heritage of Katni
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Katni district contains several Paramara and Chandela period temples and fort structures using the abundant local limestone. Bahoriband, the historical town near Katni, has a group of 9th–11th century temples showing Paramara architectural style in local limestone: shikhara towers, mandapa halls, and elaborate doorframe carvings. The limestone used at Bahoriband differs from Chanderi sandstone — it is denser, allows less fine carving, and weathers more slowly, giving the ruins a sharp unweathered appearance despite their age. Local archaeological surveys have identified 40 potential temple sites in Katni district covered by agricultural land, suggesting a denser medieval settlement pattern than current population would indicate. The Bahoriband temples have been partially consolidated by ASI and are accessible but under-visited.
