Kathak Classical Dance Lucknow Varanasi Gharanas

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Kathak is the classical dance form of north India, characterized by rapid spins (chakkar), intricate footwork (tatkar) setting complex rhythmic patterns against the tabla and pakhawaj percussion, and expressive facial and hand gesture sequences (abhinaya) drawn from Vaishnavite devotional poetry, especially the Radha-Krishna themes of the Braj region. Kathak derives from the kathakar (storyteller) tradition of north India, where bhakti-movement bards performed narrative dance-stories in temple courtyards, which was later refined in the Nawabi courts of Lucknow and the Benaras ghats under royal patronage. The two principal gharanas (schools) of Kathak developed distinct styles: the Lucknow gharana, patronized by Nawab Wajid Ali Shah in the mid-nineteenth century, emphasizes grace, lyrical flow, and thumri-based abhinaya, while the Benaras gharana developed by the Maharaj family of Varanasi emphasizes percussion virtuosity, footwork complexity, and a more vigorous masculine style. The great masters Birju Maharaj (Lucknow gharana, 1938-2022) and Lachhu Maharaj were instrumental in elevating Kathak to national recognition as a classical form. Ghungroo ankle bells worn in pairs (typically 150-200 bells per foot) are the sonic instrument of Kathak, with the dancer's footwork producing complex polyrhythmic patterns. Kathak's influence is visible in Bollywood dance forms that have absorbed its spinning, footwork vocabulary, and expressive abhinaya tradition.
