Kapurthala Rose Floriculture Export Punjab

Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team

Kapurthala district's mild subtropical climate and Bist Doab alluvial soil support commercial rose growing for the cut-flower market, with farms in Phagwara tehsil cultivating Dutch and Indian hybrid rose varieties in net-house enclosures to protect blooms from rain and wind damage. Roses are harvested at bud stage before dawn, bundled in twenty-five stems, cold-stored, and dispatched to Delhi's Ghazipur and Chandigarh's Sector 26 wholesale flower markets within twelve hours of cutting. Kapurthala's floriculture sector has grown as Punjab's progressive farmers diversify away from paddy-wheat monoculture, with government polyhouse subsidies making covered rose cultivation accessible to smallholders.
