Kanchipuram Silk Saliyar Weaving Tradition Tamil Nadu
Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team
Kanchipuram silk, woven by the Saliyar community of weavers in Kanchipuram town and the surrounding villages of Sriperumbudur and Uttaramerur, is the most prestigious silk saree in the South Indian wedding and ceremonial tradition, distinguished by its heavy pure mulberry silk warp and weft, solid gold and silver zari thread brocade work in the characteristic Kanchipuram checks and temple border patterns, and the construction technique where the body and border of the saree are woven separately on two shuttles and joined by a process called korvai interlocking, rather than the single-loom body-border weaving of other silk saree traditions. The korvai interlocking technique creates a structural junction visible as a fine diagonal join line on the reverse of the saree that is the authenticating marker of genuine Kanchipuram. The designs include temple border (temple gopuram and chariot motifs), checks (kattam), and supplementary weft brocade in the pallu with peacock, parrot, and lotus motifs. Kanchipuram silk holds GI status and the Kanchipuram Silk Saree Weavers Cooperative is the primary institution for artisan registration and quality control.
