Kambala Paddy — Coastal Karnataka's Flood-Resistant Rice
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
Kambala paddy is a traditional rice cultivation system practiced in the coastal districts of Karnataka (Dakshina Kannada, Udupi). Fields are deliberately flooded during monsoon to depths of 1–2 feet, and traditional tall-strawed varieties (3.5–4 feet) that resist lodging are grown. The flooded conditions suppress weeds naturally and allow fish (usually local carp varieties) to be co-raised in the same fields (paddy-fish integration). The buffalo race festival Kambala is named after these paddy fields. Yields are modest (2–2.5 tons/hectare) but require no pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. Local varieties include Kagga, Kala Jeera, and Jedibatta — all adapted to coastal saline conditions.
