Chandragupta Jain Pilgrimage Sites of Jhalawar

Contributed by Swadesi Knowledge Team

Jhalawar district contains several significant Jain archaeological and pilgrimage sites testifying to the region's ancient role as a Jain cultural heartland. The Chandragupta inscription at Jhalawar refers to the early history of Jain presence in the region. Cave temples at Kolvi, carved into the rocky hillsides by Jain monk communities between the 8th and 12th centuries CE, preserve some of Rajasthan's oldest rock-cut sculptures of Tirthankaras. The Jhalawar Jain temples in the old town feature elaborate marble facades with carved toranas (gateway arches) and mandapa (hall) ceilings covered with painted stucco. The regional Jain community maintains active religious activity at these sites, conducting Paryushana (Jain Lent) festivals annually. Archaeological Survey of India conservation work at the Kolvi caves uses traditional lime-plaster consolidation techniques.
