Jalandhar Dhol Drum Making Craft Punjab
Contributed by Swadesi Editorial Team
The dhol, Punjab's double-headed barrel drum, is made by Muslim and Hindu dholi craftsmen in Jalandhar's Basti Sheikh and Ram Nagar localities who source mango or sheesham wood for the shell and stretch buffalo or goat skin on both heads. Craftsmen tune the bass side with a metal ring tensioner and the treble side by rope and bamboo peg adjustment to achieve the characteristic punchy two-tone that drives Bhangra. Jalandhar's dhol workshops supply drums to professional dholi players who perform at weddings and harvest festivals across Punjab and the Punjabi diaspora circuit in Europe and North America.
