Hogla Reed Mat Weaving — Assam and West Bengal
Contributed by System
Hogla (Typha latifolia) reed, a wetland grass growing abundantly along Assam's riverbanks and Bengal's wetlands, is dried and woven into sleeping mats, table mats, and floor coverings. Weavers soak dried reeds to restore flexibility, then interlace using traditional wooden weaving frames. Women SHGs in Dhubri, Barpeta (Assam) and Malda (WB) produce hogla mats sold in local markets. A sleeping mat (6×4 ft) sells at ₹80–150 in local markets, ₹200–400 online. Easy to learn, requires no loom, minimal investment. Often combined with other livelihood activities.
